Getting Married in Australia
So, you're ready to tie the knot and embark on your happily ever after? Australia is the perfect place for couples like you, whether you're local or based overseas. I offer the flexibility to have your dream wedding practically anywhere in Australia, with the freedom to create a ceremony that reflects your unique style and love story. But before we dive into the excitement, let's cover the essential legal requirements for marriage in Australia.
1. Timing!
The first thing to know is that your ceremony can only commence one month after your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form has been formally submitted by a registered marriage celebrant, that's me. If you're nearby, we can meet in person, or we can have a video call through platforms such as Zoom, or FaceTime. No matter where you're located, I’ve got you covered!
2. Verifying Your Identity
As part of the process, I am required to verify your identity by sighting your passport or birth certificate along with your driver's license. If you've been previously married, I’ll need to see evidence of your divorce or the death certificate of your former spouse.
3. Declaration Of No Legal Impediment To Marriage
Before your marriage can take place, you'll need to complete a form called ‘Declaration Of No Legal Impediment To Marriage,' confirming that there's no legal reason preventing you from marrying each other. You can fill this out closer to your wedding date for convenience.
4. The Legal Words
During the marriage ceremony, certain wording is legally required. I, as your Celebrant, will state my name and status as an Authorised Celebrant. We'll also include the Monitum, which emphasizes the solemn and binding nature of marriage in Australia. Then, you and your partner will exchange vows, using the prescribed wording or an acceptable variation.
5. Signing the Marriage Paperwork
To make it official, you'll need two witnesses who are over 18 years old and of sound mind (sober witnesses only!). On the day, we'll provide you with three documents to sign: the Official Certificate of Marriage (submitted to the Births, Deaths, and Marriages office), a copy for my records, and a Presentation Certificate for you to keep as a cherished memento.
And there you have it! That's all you need to be legally married in Australia. Of course, you can add personal touches like exchanging rings, sharing personalised vows, and weaving your love story into the ceremony. The possibilities are endless when working with a Celebrant who understands your vision.
